Mississippi Emergency Room Errors Medical Malpractice Attorney

Although a hospital’s emergency room is often the first place that an injured person turns to for help, in many circumstances that help is simply not provided due to medical errors, overcrowding, confusion on the part of the medical staff, lack of medical personnel and a host of other reasons. In plain terms, when medical protocols provided by the medical community are not complied with, medical negligence/medical malpractice often results. Medical negligence is a breach or failure to perform according to medical standards. Injury and/or death often ensue when protocols are not followed.

Emergency Room Errors:

Although no one ever said it was easy to function at the highest levels in a hospital or instant care emergency room, competent, effective treatment for each patient is the only acceptable goal. There is no room for error when an individual’s health is involved. The following is a list of some of the many common emergency room errors:

  • ER personnel often are not provided with the patient’s case history or current complaints
  • When shifts change, there is often a complete or partial lapse of medical histories, treatments already applied, notes taken on patients charts and confusion in general as to “the next thing to do for the patient.”
  • This often results in pure omission of treatment – which can of course lead to severe conditions or even death
  • Other errors include when medical professionals ignore obvious signs of respiratory distress
  • Organ failure may be completely undetected – and untested
  • According to a 2011 Wall Street Journal report, there are more emergency room malpractice suits than in most other departments
  • Diagnostic errors ranged from 37% to 55% in cases in that report
  • One example: a man was released with a prescription of Tylenol after complaining of severe fever, chills and other symptoms. He died of the severe blood infection known as sepsis
  • Patients have been released with a diagnosis of stomach pains, only to return shortly thereafter with a heart attack

These are all examples of emergency room medical negligence. Injured patients have the right to seek medical malpractice representation from experienced, knowledgeable and competent medical negligence attorneys. Sessums Dallas specializes in medical negligence/medical malpractice cases.
